hillside,

a frisky bear/cub,

a steel frame,
chains,
heavy leather with rivets and D-rings,
padded leather loops...

Me in a supine position with legs spread feet suspended in padded leather loops, atop the heavy leather with rivets and D-rings, which is suspended by the chains, that are hanging from the steel frame.

I was attended closely and with great and enthusiastic vigor by the frisky bear/cub.

I very much enjoyed and I hope that I'll be getting the chance to repeat the experience!

leg swelling, etc.

(Link)
sorry for the late reply...

About this time lastyear i had some Major pain in my right leg, calf area. The pain moved slowly up towards the knee over about a week. Over the time that the pain was present, my lower leg was swollen and warm. At the beginning of the issue I had trouble climbing a flight of 10 steps to get into my office building.

I went to the doctor for a sinus infection/coughing issue. I told her about the trouble catching my breath after climbing the stairs and I indicated my leg pain. She passed the leg pain off as overuse-related and did nothing about it (the overuse diagnosis seemed to make sense at the time as we had a fairly energetic weekend with a friend who stayed over). She gave me a script for an inhaler and anti-biotics for the sinus/chest issue and sent me on my way.

When we got home that evening, Dave was very concerned that the doctor didn't send me to get my leg checked. I called their office the next day and found that the office was closed and neither doctor was available, the doctor that I had seen or the better doctor. I asked if there were any cover doctors available. In a huff I was given a name and number. The doctor that I went to see turned out to be the brother of the doctor that I like at my GP's office.

He took a medical history and checked out my leg. We chatted for a while about the pain, how it started and where it moved to/from. He told me that he didn't think that there was any cause for concern as I only had one or two symptoms of clot and there was no striations, but he gave me a 'script to get an ultrasound on the leg anyway just to be safe. cool, thanks Doc.

I got an appointment for the ultrasound the next late morning at the hospital that they recommended.

In the morning I went to the radiology department of the hospital and was treated to waiting for an hour and a half from the time of my appointment to time that they actually started the test. The technician finished the test just after noontime and I was told to clean up, have a seat outside and a doctor will be out to give you the readings. A doctor came out about 1/2 hour later to tell me that they didn't see any clots.

OK, clean bill of health, we get to go to Hillside for a long weekend and I don't have to worry about getting rushed to a hospital in the mountains of NE PA. cool.

I tried to stay off my leg as much as possible over the weekend and rest it. The swelling lessened a little and the pain eased a little.

Over the following week, I was able to work from home and keep the leg elevated and used ice to try and get the pain to subside.

It was feeling pretty good until Saturday morning. I took a shower in the AM and went out to sit on the couch with Dave and Jason, who was visiting.

And the pain was back, and worse then the first time. It went from the middle of my calf to just above the knee. Krap! it's back and it's worse.

On Monday I called my GP and got an appointment. She checked out the situation and diagnosed a ruptured popliteal cyst and sent me for an MRI of the knee. The MRI found that I had indications of fluid surrounding the knee and they saw a popliteal cyst and indicated the there was a signal return from the knee area that showed arthritus in the joint. My GP referred me to a orthopedic surgeon, got an appt for 2 weeks which was the soonest that I could get.

The pain was completely gone again by the time I saw the orthopedic surgeon, but the swelling was still present. Thee orthopedic said that tere was nothing to be done as there was no pain present. I indicated that I wanted an answer to the swelling and the pain and he suggested a vascular surgeon as there seemed to be nothing structurally wrong with the joint or area.

leg swelling, etc. continued...

(Link)
[continued]

As you may know I am a *big guy* and one of the constants in the healthcare profession, from my perspective, is their insistance with my loosing weight and watching what I eat. (piss off and find the f*ckin problem!)

I got the appointment for the vascular surgeon, soonest was 1 month from when I called. (total elapsed time about 2 months to the appointment)

I found the office, went in filled out more paperwork, went in to see the doctor and he told me that most likely, as I am a diabetic and overweight, that the pain and swelling was caused by a failure of the (little valves) in the veins of my leg, they keep the blood moving up the leg against gravity with every pump of the heart and if that was the case, the only thing that we could do was diet and exercise and compression wrap/stockings to minimize the swelling and that I would have the issue for the rest of my life. BUT, his exam also included another ultrasound in the next room...

I padded over the room across the hall and got, even more undressed. The technician started the test and was poking and prodding and then she got to the area behind my right knee and her neutral expression became worried, even angry. I asked her what she found and she blirted out that she couldn't understand how (they) could have missed it. I asked her to repeat herself and she said that there were multiple clots behind my knee and that she couldn't understand how the previous tech had missed them.

I got worried.

ok. I've been walking around with a couple of ticking timebombs behind my right knee for the last, almost 2 months... SHIT! I called Dave and he was able to calm me down enough that I could listen to the doctor when he came in to confirm the diagnosis.

Apparently I had not 1 not 2 but 3 clots behind my right knee.

The doctor indicated that there were one of two ways that we could proceed. He could send me to the hospital and I would be admitted and get the heparin by IV or he could prescribe home injections and I would give them to myself for 5 days and we would avoid the hospital.

I choose to stay home and give myself the shots. Either way I would be on coumadin and getting frequent blood tests for the next 6+ months.

He did some checking, made a call or two and I left the office with a prescription for the injectibles and for coumadin and the name of a pharmicist to contact to fill them.

pick up the injectibles, and the pills and contact my GP's office to find out how to do the injections.

Giving yourself injection is simply No Fun!

The moral of this story is:
1) if you have pain in your legs that moves around, take one regular aspirin twice a day until you get to see a doctor that has a clue.
2) if you are sent to get an ultrasound, make sure that you go to the Vascular Lab of the hospital for the ultrasound, !!NOT!! radiology.
3) if you still have pain and swelling, go see a vascular surgeon and get checked out.

My leg is still a little swollen to today, and it seems to get slightly larger and smaller depending on my level of activity and rest.

But legs up in a sling seems to be the most therepeutic position for me. [grin]

But I don't get to be in that position too frequently.
