debit card fraud caught... @ 01:54 pm

Location: apartment 9B
Mood: curious okay but concerned

Just after rising, this morning, while checking messages and e-mail; I saw that overnight I received a couple of messages from my bank's alerting system saying that there were "country not provided" charges made to my card.  Logging into their online banking system and investigating further it seems that in the overnight ( after 10:10 PM ) there were about a half-dozen charges from the places like:

  Diet Max (EL TECAL) 800.320.2983,
  LeanSpa (CT) 888.839.9990,
  RN *Real.com (WA) 206-674-2650  and
  Mni*CreditReport.com (CA) 866-883.3309

Googling the phone numbers for each of the merchants revealed several pages on each vendor / merchant that caused me concern.  I don't think that the merchants are, themselves, involved in this, just that many folks seem to have concerns with the "services" they offer and in some cases, their billing practices.  I've never used any of them and have no interest in, what I suspect, are their products.  I chose not to call the vendors, to investigate directly, to preserve the fact that I've Never had any dealings with the folks.

I'm hoping that there are no new unauthorized charges!

I called the bank to report the compromised card and to have them close the card and issue a new one.  While on the line with the CSR at the bank I signed up for (a second) credit monitoring / privacy protection service.

There are still a few steps in this process, so I'll have to be diligent and systematic over the next few weeks.  I'll also have to check into my previous statements to see if these kinds of charges happened in the recent past.  There may be nothing that can be done about the past charges, if there are any, but it might lead me to understand where or who is behind these unauthorized charges.

Good Luck folks and remember to review your card & banking statements regularly!

Mom update. @ 12:46 pm

Location: apartment 9B
Mood: blank meh, again, w/ headache...
Music: ding, ding, ding of the solar chimes and splash of Dave taking a shower.

so.  Mom update - yesterday afternoon:  (I just sent this to an IRL FB buddy)...

I'm not exactly sure how mom is doing, she's a little doped up, it seems that she was wearing a "pain patch" on her shoulder when I was on the line with her, but she reports much less pain in her ribs and isn't sure that she's doing as well as the folks at Kessler say she's doing.  Mom also said that someone at Kessler dropped by saying that she will likely be transferred out on Wednesday and when asked where to send her, she mentioned the place, in Maywood, that she stepped-down to after her femur break 2 years ago.  I'm not all that convinced that she's ready, physically, for it as she's said things that seem to indicate that she is holding back from / in P.T. either to avoid pain or ???

I suspect we'll be heading up to Northern NJ tomorrow to visit and check on the house...

wireless phone & VM... @ 05:26 pm

Location: apartment 9B
Mood: amused amused
Music: fans running and Dave typing.

After lunch today I checked my phone and saw that I had a few missed calls from a member of the Club and wondered why he left no voice mail.  When we got home I called my cell number from the house line and it rang and rang until I got a network message saying, 'The subscriber you are calling could not be reached... please try your call again later... .'  Hum, how odd, I though.

So I called my cell carrier - AT&T wireless (AKA:Apple Wireless) and see if there was something messed up when I had them switch the account over to my new phone.  A couple of months ago I went from a 5 year old AT&T/Cingular/HTC 8525 to a Google Nexus One.  I explained the issue and asked if the agent would check to see why I've been getting many missed calls w/ no voice mail left lately.  The agent checked my account and saw that the "ring time" before VM picks up was to zero (never transfer to VM) on my account which causes the incoming call to ring until I pick it up or the network sends it to the "the subscriber could not be reached" message.

Moral of this story is:
  if you're on AT&T; call your cell;
if you can leave a VM - good,
if not - call customer service and have them check your voice mail settings.

I asked the agent why / who would have changed the setting on the account, she said, that it may have been an oversight on the part of the agent who did add/replace on my new phone's IMEI and that the old phone may have handled incoming no-answer different than the new phone.  She apologized several times and applied a good-customer credit to my account and thanked me for using them as a carrier.  I asked that she call my cell and leave me a VM so that we could be sure that the changes took effect and so that I could see of the message waiting indicator came on.  Both worked well.  The VM indicator looks like the 1980's reel-to-reel tape deck (TEAC X-10R) that I have at my parent's house.  The indicator also looks a little like a DEC PDP-11's DECTape device, except with the reels above the heads...

This was a good customer service experience and I got a credit for my trouble.  I would have preferred to not have had the issue in the first place, but then, I didn't get my Nexus One from AT&T, so they probably don't have any pre-built set of parameters that they could apply to my phone's account as they probably did for the 8525.  I got the phone direct from Google in the last shipment before they stopped selling wireless phones direct to the public...

conference call meetings - AKA: need more coffee. @ 10:00 am

Mood: displeased

I suspect that some folks will say I'm being too critical, or narrow minded, on the subject.

IMO if you are the moderator for a call and >85% of the folks arrive on time and certain participants know they are required on the call and are chronically late / forget to attend and its a half-hour meeting; wouldn't you start reaching out to them before 20% of the call was spent waiting on their arrival?

Just sayin' ...

It's here... @ 04:45 pm

Mood: happy happy

My Nexus One arrived at the Hillside front office.  I retrieved it and now He's charging up...

I'm getting a new mobile handset{Google Nexus One}, inquiring on handset loss/damage coverage... @ 02:19 pm

Mood: okay ...just Okay...

I should probably preface this entry by saying that in the overnight Saturday I ordered a Google Nexus One from the Google online phone store.

My Google Phone website experience was smooth and their website seemed to be well thought-out.  My 45 minute call with the Google CSR was pleasant and the fellow was quite well-informed and helpful.  I asked the fellow from Google if they had handset loss/damage protection or used a particular company for that service.  He said No, but when he was with T-Mobile as a tech / CSR they used asurion protection services and gave me the number to call.

Behind the cut / the remainder of this entry is about my experience with the asurion.com website and phone IVR / CSR process.
